Pet rabbits
Rabbit welfare is a top priority for us.
We’re at the start of a journey to improve pet rabbit welfare and we look forward to working with all the rabbit owners who have already signed up to our online rabbit community to make sure all rabbits lead happy and healthy lives.
Rabbits are fantastic animals
They’re sociable, intelligent, inquisitive and playful. So it's no surprise that they’re currently the third most popular pet in the UK after cats and dogs.
However, sadly thousands of pet rabbits end up in our care every year. This seems to indicate that the responsibility and commitment needed to care for rabbits is often not considered before the rabbit is brought home. We’re also really concerned that many pet rabbits are suffering because their owners simply aren’t aware of how to meet their complex welfare needs.
Inspector Tony Woodley talks about the huge numbers of rabbits coming into our care and the type of cases they see on a daily basis.
Owning and caring for rabbits is great fun and can be very rewarding, but it’s a big responsibility and a long-term commitment in terms of care and finances. Find out more on how to care for your rabbit.
