Shopping guide for salmon

Atlantic salmon is the most commonly farmed species in the UK, with approximately 70 companies producing over 140.000 tonnes of farmed salmon each year and 90% of this occurs in Scotland.

Salmon is Scotland’s largest export. Aquaculture is a term used to describe this farming and although it relieves pressure from declining wild stocks it requires welfare standards to be met to ensure that responsible practices are carried out. By choosing higher welfare products, such as Freedom Food you are directly helping to improve the lives of these farmed fish.

What to look for when buying salmon

The Freedom Food mark can be found on farm-reared salmon products, so be sure to check the label. It’s only salmon carrying the Freedom Food logo that can provide you with the assurance that it has been looked after, throughout its life, to the RSPCA’s strict welfare standards. The scheme only approves well-managed farms that meets these standards, all of which are developed by the RSPCA’s team of farm animal welfare scientists.
