Freedom Food supports Fairer Fillings

National Sandwich Week (15-21 May) was the perfect time to launch the RSPCA Fairer Fillings campaign in Westminster, aimed at encouragingpeople to consider what they put into their favourite snack. Whether they choose chicken, egg, salmon, ham or bacon fillings, consumers are being urged to think about the conditions the animals have lived in.

At the RSPCA Fairer Fillings launch event, Freedom Food marketing manager Liam Kurzeja joined RSPCA campaigners at Victoria Tower Gardens alongside the Houses of Parliament to promote the initiative to MPs and secure some regional coverage in their constituencies.

The campaign launch was designed to coincide with National Sandwich Week and encourage people to think about what they put in their sandwiches,” said Liam. “Sainsbury’s supported us here by supplying a variety of Freedom Food labelled sandwiches for MPs to try via members Buckingham Foods – and with Britons enjoying over 11 billion sandwiches each year, the choice and availability of higher welfare fillings could make a huge potential difference to the lives of somany farm animals.

But research suggests that buying a sandwich with a fairer filling can prove a challenge and it can be difficult to find ‘food on-the-go’ that contains higherwelfare products – or even labelling that details howanimals have been farmed.

“Nowadays, more and more consumers are choosinghigher welfare meat and eggs as part of a weekly foodshop, but when it comes to making or buying asandwich for lunch, people rarely think about animalwelfare,” said Eloise Shavelar, RSPCA farm animalcampaign manager. “We need our shops to providemore animal welfare friendly sandwiches.”
