Demand your government goes cage-free
The UK Government recently introduced mandatory rules called ‘Government Buying Standards’ (GBS) that demand as a minimum English public sector institutions to buy eggs from hens kept in ‘enriched’ battery cages. Effectively this means taxpayers’ money could be used to support confined systems of production which prevent huge numbers of hens from being able to carry out many natural behaviours properly each year.
As the standards are mandatory for central government - including government departments and some parts of our armed forces – the campaign group Sustain have estimated that this will result in up to £3.2million of taxpayers’ money being spent on eggs from caged hens and more than 107,000 hens confined to spending their entire productive life in a cage.
Ironically, MPs are not served any food made with shell eggs from caged hens in the House of Commons.
So, what can you do about it? If you live in England, please send a message to relevant government departments to demand that government goes cage-free today. Fill in the online form at http://www.sustainweb.org/goodfoodforourmoney/
