Welsh Assembly switches to Freedom Food
The National Assembly for Wales has become the first UK national institution to introduce Freedom Food labelled whole and ingredient eggs and salmon into its catering outlets, after a huge vote in favour of switching to Freedom Food labelled produce. The products will also be available in the Welsh Assembly’s public cafe.
The move follows a survey of 200 Assembly Members and their staff and Commission and Welsh Assembly Government staff. The survey results revealed an overwhelming 81 per cent voted in favour of switching to Freedom Food labelled produce.
It is the intention of the Assembly to introduce further approved products – including chicken, pork, beef and lamb as they become available.
“This is excellent news for Freedom Food and its members,” says Freedom Food commercial manager, Lydia Stratton. “The RSPCA have worked very hard with us to help bring this about and we are delighted with the outcome. And we are also grateful to Charlton House Catering for their positive engagement in the changeover as well as the Assembly’s foodservice suppliers Castell Howell.”
There are 139 Freedom Food members in Wales - with RSPCA welfare standards covering around 1.8 million animals.
Established Freedom Food members Tony and Gwen Burgess - of Birchgrove Eggs near Aberystwyth - are supplying the Welsh Assembly with the Freedom Food approved free-range eggs.
