Success for Freedom Food members at Good Farm Animal Welfare
Leading farm animal welfare organisation Compassion in World Farming (CIWF)
has named many Freedom Food members as winners at this year’s Good Farm
Animal Welfare Awards 2011.
The Award ceremony took place, at Freemasons’ Hall in Covent Garden on Wednesday 6 July. This year, CIWF’s Food Business Team awarded a total of 48 organisations for their commitment to taking steps towards higher animal welfare.
The awards were presented in four categories: The Good Egg Awards (rewarding organisations who make the commitment to source cage-free eggs); The Good Chicken Awards (rewarding organisations who make the commitment to source higher welfare chicken); The Good Dairy Awards (rewarding organisations who make the commitment to source dairy produce from higher welfare cows) and the Supermarket Awards.
The Good Dairy Awards winners included Brookfield Farm (a partnership between DB Foods and Tarrant Valley Farms) and Dovecote Farm. The Good Chicken Awards included the Black Farmer – who sources from a number of Freedom Food approved farms – and Traditional Norfolk Poultry (TNP). The Good Egg Awards saw wins for members Laverstoke Park Farm, Stokes and the Happy Egg Co (Noble Foods).
The evening also recognised producers who are leading the way in terms of better pig welfare. This included members Laverstoke Park Farm, Dents, Packington Pork, Vion, and Bishop Burton College, who were commended for demonstrating higher welfare for sows and pigs. This will lead the way towards The Good Pig Award when it is launched at the next awards ceremony in 2012.
Congratulations also to members at Coombe Farm (Warren Trust) for their work with Waitrose who subsequently won an award for Most Compassionate Supermarket.
The other supermarket awards went to Sainsbury’s for Best Volume Supermarket and the Co-operative for Most Improved Supermarket.
