Farm animal welfare issues

There are specific RSPCA welfare standards for laying hens, chickens, turkeys, ducks, salmon, pigs, sheep, beef and dairy cattle. Theses standards, developed by the RSPCA’s team of farm animal welfare scientists, take into account scientific research, advice from veterinary specialists and practical experience from the farming industry.

Freedom Food is the only assurance scheme that covers the whole of an animal's life from birth to slaughter. Each farm animal must be given a nourishing diet and a spacious, comfortable and stimulating environment that meets their physical and behavioural needs. The RSPCA standards govern the whole of an animal’s life, including how they are handled, transported and slaughtered, ensuring that they receive knowledgeable care and management at every step.
