Archer's Dairy
Forget the seaside: ice cream fans in the north-east are heading inland to a farm near Darlington to savour an award-winning range of flavours made with milk from the resident herd of Jersey cows, a breed associated with producing the crème de la crème.
More than 25,000 people visited Archer's Jersey Ice Cream in 2006, just two years after John and Sue Archer decided to branch out from simply producing milk from their farm. John, who was born on his father’s Jersey cattle farm in Kenya, says:
We joined Freedom Food for peace of mind: to ensure we were doing everything right. The scheme gives a credible assurance. And, by putting the Freedom Food logo on our ice cream products, our customers are assured our welfare standards are approved by the RSPCA, which they all know.
In March 2008 Archer's opened new premises at The Station in Richmond, Yorkshire which is an exciting venue visited by 300,000 tourists a year and filled with local history. This past year saw 50,000 visitors through their doors and they recently celebrated their first franchise opening in Northallerton.
