What is animal cruelty?

Young people may become involved in cruelty to animals for a variety of reasons. The activities below address each of these contributing factors.

  • In this activity, young people read newspaper reports about real incidents that the RSPCA has been involved in. They use the five freedoms to help them decide whether the animals in each story suffered.

  • In this group of activities, young people develop an understanding that cruelty means causing suffering, either because of something you have done, or something you have omitted to do.

Intervention programmes

As a guide to which of the sections on the left to use with the young person, we suggest that you use the online assessment tool Developing a suitable intervention programme (Word 17KB).
