Encouraging responsible dog ownership

Young people may become involved in cruelty to animals for a variety of reasons. The activities below address each of these contributing factors.

  • In this activity young people learn how professionals train their dogs to do very complicated and responsible tasks using only reward-based training. They are encouraged to train their dogs in this positive manner and are given the opportunity to ‘hit back’ at some of the negative media young dog owners receive in the press.

  • In this activity, young people develop an understanding of the complex needs of dogs and how to provide for those needs.

  • In this activity young people look at some of the myths surrounding the breeding of dogs and the rehoming of dogs from animal centres.

Intervention programmes

As a guide to which of the sections on the left to use with the young person, we suggest that you use the online assessment tool Developing a suitable intervention programme (Word 17KB).
