  • Who is responsible for ensuring animals' needs are met?

Ground rules for pet animals

  • This activity is just one part of a range of resources addressing the needs of young people who have been involved, or who are at risk of being involved, in cruelty to animals. Our online assessment tool Developing a suitable intervention programme (Word 17KB) will help you create individualised intervention programmes from these resources.
  • In this activity, young people develop ground rules for owning and visiting pets, to ensure they are safe and well.
  • Young people will develop the understanding that:
  1. people who have pets must give them everything they need to be happy and healthy
  2. when we come into contact with someone else’s pet animals, we must behave in a way that does not scare or harm them
  3. society expects us all to be responsible for pet animals.
  • You will need to do the Smiley face activity from the Basic welfare needs and sentience section beforehand.
  • It is also important to do this activity before going on to the Visit activity in this section if your visit is connected with pet animals.
