Identifying cruelty
- This activity is just one part of a range of resources addressing the needs of young people who have been involved, or who are at risk of being involved, in cruelty to animals. Our online assessment tool Developing a suitable intervention programme (Word 17KB) will help you create individualised intervention programmes from these resources.
- In this activity, young people read newspaper reports about real incidents that the RSPCA has been involved in. They use the five freedoms to help them decide whether the animals in each story suffered.
- Young people will:
- develop an understanding that cruelty happens when our actions, or lack of action, cause suffering
- be able to identify what the suffering is in relation to specific cases, referring to the five freedoms.
- Before doing this activity, we suggest you run some of the activities in the Basic needs and sentience section.
