Assembly: baby animals

This lesson provides an assembly topic suitable for Key Stage 1 and 2 pupils in spring and early summer.

Curriculum objectives

Pupils should learn:

  • that all animals should be treated with respect
  • that humans have a responsibility to ensure the well-being of animals.

Animal welfare objectives

Pupils should learn:

  • that wild baby animals need special care from their parents
  • to appreciate that human intervention can do more harm than good
  • to know that the best way to help a baby animal is to leave it alone unless it is hurt or in danger.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this lesson:

  • most pupils: begin to appreciate the ways in which humans have a responsibility towards all animals
  • some pupils have not made so much progress and: will know that we have a responsibility towards animals
  • some pupils have progressed further and: begin to appreciate the ways in which humans have a responsibility towards all animals and know how to help protect wild animals.
