What is a habitat?

Habitats are places where animals and plants live. The plants and animals - including humans - in a habitat need each other to survive.  Remind the pupils of the code of conduct established in the Habitats ground rules lesson (see Useful websites tab).

Curriculum objectives

Pupils should learn:

  • that there are differences between local habitats
  • that there are different kinds of plants and animals in the immediate environment
  • to treat animals and the environment with care and sensitivity
  • to use senses to describe a habitat and record in a table.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this session:

  • most pupils will: recognise that there are different local habitats
  • some pupils will not have made so much progress and will: identify some local habitats
  • some pupils will have progressed further and will also: suggest reasons why there are different habitats.
