The transportation game
This lesson will help students to understand some of the animal welfare problems that may occur during live animal transportation and the role of enforcement officers in ensuring the well-being of animals during transportation. Curriculum objectives
Students should learn:
- that the chain of food production includes transportation from farm to slaughter and that this has potential issues for animal welfare.
Animal welfare objectives
Students should learn:
- to understand that the animal handler has a legal duty of care towards farm animals during transportation
- to recognise the need for animal stress levels to be kept to a minimum
- to recognise the risk of spreading disease whilst collecting from various farms
Learning outcomes
At the end of this lesson:
- most students will: understand the important part played by live animal transportation in food production and how this may compromise the animals' welfare
- some students have not made so much progress and: will have some understanding of the part played by live animal transportation in food production and how this may compromise the animals' welfare
- some students will have progressed further and: understand the role of both the haulier and the enforcement officer in protecting animals' welfare.
