Who made breakfast?
This lesson focuses on the needs of the farm animals that contribute to our breakfast and the responsibility of the farmer to meet those needs. Pupils also consider how they could help the animals while they are shopping. It would be useful to look at human needs beforehand. This lesson follows Thank you for the food we eat.
Curriculum objectives
Pupils should learn:
- that animals, including humans, move, feed, grow, use their senses and reproduce
- that humans and other animals need food and water to stay alive
- how to treat animals with care and sensitivity
- to recognise what they like or dislike, what is fair or unfair and what is right or wrong.
Animal welfare objectives
Pupils should learn:
- to recognise that farm animals have basic needs and to consider the farmer's role in meeting these
- to consider how we can make a difference to the welfare of farm animals by the choices we make when shopping.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this lesson:
- most pupils will: recognise some foods that are produced by hens and cows. They will have a good understanding of the basic needs of farm animals and that the farmer has a responsibility to meet these needs. They will know that some farmers show an RSPCA Freedom Food logo on their food as a sign of higher animal welfare
- some pupils will not have progressed so far and will: be aware that farm animals produce some of the food we eat. They will have some understanding of the basic needs of farm animals and that the farmer has a responsibility to meet these needs
- some pupils will have progressed further and will: recognise that the RSPCA Freedom Food logo is a sign of higher farm animal welfare. They will understand that they can make choices whilst they are shopping with adults that affect the welfare of animals.
