Eggs 'r' us
In this lesson, pupils will design a logo/packaging for eggs that have been produced in an egg production system of their choice. Their logo will explain the production system in which the eggs have been produced and provide consumers with the information they need to make an informed decision about which eggs to buy.
Curriculum objectives
Pupils should learn:
- that the life processes common to humans and other animals include nutrition, movement, growth and reproduction
- to talk and write about their opinions and explain their views, on issues that affect themselves and society
- to research, discuss and debate topical issues, problems and events.
Animal welfare objectives
Pupils should learn:
- that laying hens are kept in three different systems, that have an impact on the welfare of the hens
- that they can look out for information on egg boxes that should help them make informed decisions when purchasing eggs
- that farm animals are sentient creatures and need to be treated with sensitivity and to be kept in environments that enable them to behave naturally.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this lesson:
- most pupils will: be able to describe the three main egg production systems (cage, barn and free-range), how the hens are kept and how to identify eggs from each system. They are also able to design a new logo and explain why they chose it
- some pupils have not made so much progress and: are able to state the three main production systems and are able to look for key symbols or words to identify eggs produced in the three systems. They are able to contribute to the design and presentation of the new logo
- some pupils will have progressed further and: are able to compare and contrast the three main production systems in terms of the hen's welfare and the types of eggs produced and labelled to purchase. They are able to design and present information on their new logo confidently and competently.
