Circus animals - a debate

In this lesson students take part in debating a motion about circus animals. This lesson only applies to legislation in England.
Curriculum objectives
Students should learn:
- to reflect on an issue of public concern and consider how the law relates to it
- to consider some of the social, moral and political dimensions of an issue such as animal welfare.
Animal welfare objectives
Students should learn:
- to understand that laws and regulations specifically covering circus and performing animals are currently being prepared by government under the Animal Welfare Act 2006.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this session:
- most students: will have a broad understanding of the use of animals in circuses. They research and discuss this controversial issue, present their ideas and reflect on their opinions and those of others
- some students have not made so much progress and: will understand that people have different views on the use of animals in circuses. They take part in discussion of this controversial issue
- some students have progressed further and: in addition will understand that debate provides opportunities for changes and amendments to be made to an original proposal. Students have the opportunity to make a formal presentation in Standard English (NSE).
