The Co-operative has been voted the British public's favourite animal welfare-friendly supermarket.

The annual RSPCA Good Business Awards ceremony took place on Wednesday, 6 October.

The awards recognise ethical business approaches to animal welfare in the food and fashion industries.

It was with 45 per cent of the vote that the ethically-minded local store took the top prize, pipping Sainsbury’s, Marks and Spencer and Waitrose to the post. Here are a few reasons why we love The Co-operative:

  • They were the first retailer to support the RSPCA's farm animal welfare standards. This means that you can trust that the animals used in their Freedom Food labelled products have been reared, handled, transported and slaughtered to high standards devised and monitored by the RSPCA

  • They take the welfare of their chickens very seriously, ensuring that they have among the highest standards of living of the industry

  • The Co-operative is the largest retailer to stock only free-range and organic eggs, so you can be sure that the eggs you eat have come from happy hens.

We believe it's important that young people in the UK understand where their food comes from, and have an opinion as to what methods of farming and food production they find acceptable.

We have devised the following lesson plans to aid in the education of these important issues:

  • 'A little egg-stra space' - Farm animals, KS1
  • 'Freedom Food farms', and 'Eggs r us' - Farm Animals, KS2
  • All lessons in the 'Farming' area of focus - KS4
