The number of incidents of animal cruelty reported to the RSPCA is increasing. We believe it is important that individuals involved in the most serious cases are brought to justice and prevented from causing further harm to animals.

Animal cruelty is a huge problem
Every year, thousands of animals in England and Wales suffer from abuse and neglect. In 2010 the RSPCA investigated almost 160,000 complaints of alleged animal cruelty, over 10 per cent more than in 2009.
 

In nine out of ten cases, advice and assistance from our inspectors is enough to prevent further harm or neglect. However, in cases where there has been a deliberate act of violence against an animal, where people will not accept assistance, or in extreme cases of neglect, we consider prosecution under laws such as the Animal Welfare Act 2006.
 

Exclusive expertise in prosecuting cases of animal cruelty
Last year the RSPCA successfully prosecuted 1,114 defendants. We are the only organisation prosecuting against animal cruelty on this scale.

We are careful only to prosecute when there is sufficient evidence to win the case and when it is within the public interest to do so. Our objective is usually to secure a ban in order to protect animals from future harm.

Prosecuting against animal cruelty since 1824
We have been successfully using the legal system to prosecute against animal cruelty since 1824. In 2010 we had a 97 per cent success rate. Since it was founded, the RSPCA has secured more than 435,000 convictions.

Our inspectors rescued two collies and their litters from an abusive owner and appalling conditions. Despite severe neglect, many of the puppies were still alive.

Thanks to the care and attention of our experts, all the puppies recovered and were rehomed with loving new owners.

After costs recovered, we still need on average £2,100 to prosecute just one defendant, including legals fees. Caring for the animals during case proceedings can cost many thousands more.
