Animal Cruelty Prevention Appeal
Find out more about our work to prevent animal cruelty through education and how your support can make a difference
With our cruelty line taking increasingly more complaints, the RSPCA has embarked on a ground breaking project targeting ‘high risk’ groups of young people in an effort to tackle animal cruelty at the root cause.
The Project known as ‘Hastings Wild Things’ is based at Mallydams Wood, the RSPCA flagship education and wildlife rehabilitation centre in East Sussex. It is designed to reach disengaged children and teenage parents.

Tackling the issues of social deprivation
Hastings is in the top 10 percent of the most deprived areas in England and the Mallydams Wood education staff are working closely with local agencies to identify the barriers preventing young people and teenage parents accessing nature. Through a tailored education programme our aim is to raise awareness of animal welfare and the woodland environment. We hope to inspire a generation of children who will come to appreciate and nurture animals and the natural world.
Using a tailored education programme
The groups will be taught by our expert team, including a Woodland Youth Worker and a specialist Young Parents Officer. Activities include badger watching, animal tracking and bushcraft skills with the opportunity to gain an accredited AQA qualification.
“So many young people in our towns and cities do not get the chance to get close to nature and this project will open up amazing opportunities for disaffected young people in Hastings. Through these innovative education projects, we can promote understanding and reduce cruelty and suffering to animals.”
