Our work with aquatic wild animals covers many areas:
- In terms of farming, we produce guidelines for producing higher welfare farmed fish, conduct research, and have developed a protocol for the humane dispatch of crustacea, such as crabs and lobsters.
- We investigate incidences of persecution and deliberate harm to aquatic animals.
- We rehabilitate aquatic animals that are injured, poisoned, ill and abandoned - either naturally or as a result of human activity.
- We are members of the Wildlife and Countryside Link Whales working group, which seeks to improve protection of cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises).
- We monitor bycatch levels in the UK and use results for lobbying. Read our cetacean bycatch indicator in the most recent version of The Welfare State: Measuring Animal Welfare in the UK.
- We monitor incidents involving swans and fishing litter to produce an annual report on the scale of the problem and we are working with other organisations including the Angling Trust, the Environment Agency and the National Swan Convention, which represents swan rescue organisations, to reduce the impact of lost and discarded fishing tackle which causes injuries to swans and other wildlife. Read our fishing tackle indicator in the most recent version of The Welfare State: Measuring Animal Welfare in the UK.
- We educate the public by producing educational resources for children and information sheets.
