Border collie Sophie was already 10 years old when Lorraine Scott gave her the loving home she so desperately needed.
Lorraine spotted Sophie on our website and, having previously owned border collies, knew instantly that she was the dog for her.
Once Lorraine had gone through the rehoming process and successfully adopted Sophie she was able to take her anxious new pet home.
At first Sophie’s body language indicated her anxieties, apprehension and confusion.
Being touched made her anxious - in particular she hated her rear and chest being touched. If she bumped into a shod foot, she would react with a growl.
Sadly many of the animals who come into our care have been rescued from neglect or cruelty and this can make them wary of new situations.
Sometimes they will have spent considerable time with us whilst their previous owners are prosecuted.
Animals like Sophie just need to be given a second chance
Sophie is a very different dog now. With patience and understanding her confidence has grown and she has a completely new life filled with love not fear.
Lorraine said:
From our first days together we showed her firm control and gentleness. Making allowances for any odd negative moments, reassuring her saying ‘it’s alright Sophie, we understand’ as we don’t know what flashbacks she has of her past.
Her walks are joyous, she runs across the field, her tail bouncing in the air and always checking by a glance to see where I am.
At home she snuggles up to me and I stroke her head, her ears, round her neck, down her back and when I stop she raises her paw and bashes me with it as if to say ‘don’t stop’.
I just love loving her and she’s never far from where I am.
