Adopt a horse - special appeals

Our special appeals feature some of the horses and ponies in our care who are looking for a particular type of new home.

As horses take a long time to be rehabilitated, some of these horses and ponies may have spent some time in RSPCA care.

Rehabilitating pregnant mares

Of all the different horses that we take into our care, some of the most problematic are pregnant mares.

Even though their condition may improve quite quickly, it is important that we give them every chance to see out their pregnancy in peace.

This usually involves caring for them until the foal is born, reared and weaned, because few adopters have enough experience to take on a mare in mid-pregnancy.

Meet Countess

Countess is a seven-year-old bay pacer who was brought into our care by an RSPCA inspector because she was in such a poor condition, she could hardly stand.

Her rehabilitation was straightforward – she enjoys a few home comforts – and she foaled a lovely bay filly called Zara in May 2010

Although Countess was still in poor condition herself, she made a good job of rearing Zara.

Zara, like her royal namesake, turned out to be a determined young lady with lots of character. And she has happily been successfully rehomed.

So after all that effort, Countess would also like to find a new home – preferably as a companion – where she can reward her owner's loving care with her company and kind nature.

At only seven years old and nearly 15hh, she could well be brought on as a hack by an experienced rider.

We are sure she has not been ridden before, and she has certainly had other foals before Zara.
