Turkey welfare

We're concerned that the way in which many turkeys are reared, handled, transported and slaughtered could be greatly improved. We're working to try to ensure that as many farmed turkeys as possible have a good quality of life.

How turkeys behave

To understand how to best provide for their welfare needs, it helps to have an idea of how turkeys behave. Commercial breeds of turkey have many of the same natural instincts as their wild relatives. These include:

  • Comfort and grooming activities - such as preening, ruffling feathers, stretching wings and dustbathing
  • Roosting on raised perches at night for comfort and to feel safe from predators
  • Running and exercising
  • Exploring their environment
